Axbridge Archaeological and Local History Society

The Society, which was founded in 1950, exists to promote interest in the rich history and archaeology of Axbridge and the surrounding area.

 We hold a series of talks through the winter and visits during the summer to places of interest.  If you’re interested in archaeology or just want to know more about the history of your local area then please come along to our meetings which are listed on the calendar.  You are assured of a warm welcome.

Isle of Wedmore Society

The Society, founded in 1962, has the aim to promote interest in and care for the conservation, beauty and attractive features of the Parish of Wedmore, by encouraging good planning in character with the locality.

A series of illustrated talks is  given each year in the Masonic Hall (just left of the Chemist's shop) on a variety of subjects, including those related to the Parish, followed by tea or coffee & biscuits. Membership is open to all.

An annual subscription pays for hire of the hall, speakers’ fees and refreshments.

                        then September to November

                        on the 4th Thursday of these months

We particularly enjoy working with local schools by organising events such as Mock Interviews, Young Writers, Young Business and Young Speakers competitions.

We welcome members of both sexes, and our members range in age from 30 to 80 years olds. Most meetings include dinner; and we have a very varied progamme of speakers and events.

Wedmore Bridge Club meets every Monday evening, including Bank Holidays.

Calendar dates etc. are available on the Club Web Site.

The Club hosts, on average 10 tables and is a member of the English Bridge Union. Teams drawn from the Club compete regularly in Somerset County competitions.

Moreover, the Club is fortunate having a membership which includes several county level players.

Wedmore over 50's Dance Group
     

Hello we are a friendly group of over 50's who meet on a regular basis in Wedmore.

From January to March we meet in The Masonic Hall in Wedmore on the 3rd

Wednesday from 2.15 and have a variety of speakers followed by a cuppa.

During the Summer we have outings to the coast or other places of interest.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 18th October to Dunster Lynton and Lynmouth departing from Wedmore car park at 9.15 am.

About the WIs and federations

The Women’s Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War.

Since then the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK.

The WI will celebrated its centenary in 2015 and currently has over 210,000 members in around 6,600 WIs.

In Wedmore YFC we do Stock judging, Sports, Public speaking, Different events like discos and bingos.
